Why Tonsil Stones Smell & How to Treat Bad Breath

Bad smell

If you’re familiar with tonsil stones, or have ever experienced them first hand, they you might be aware that they can cause pretty strong bad breath, or halitosis as it’s known in the medical world.

This could force those affected away from social events because of what people might think of them and may change how they act when in situations such as those by being more conserved than normal.

The result is a feeling of embarrassment, something that no one wants to go through, and can often be crippling.

That’s why it’s completely understandable that those affected will want to know how to stop this from happening again in the future.

If this is you – and I’d imagine it is because why else would you be reading this – then you’re in luck because that’s exactly what I’ll be showing you in this post.

How to Get Rid of Bad Breath From Tonsil Stones

Oil Pulling

#1 Oil Pulling

This method for improving overall oral hygiene has been around for thousands of years and is popularly used in most asian countries.

One of the biggest culprits to your bad breath is the sulfur on the tonsil stones, therefore if you want to get rid of your bad breath you need to get rid of the sulfur containing bacteria.

This is where the oil comes in.

Oil Pulling is basically you swirling about 1 tablespoon of oil (either olive, coconut or sesame) around your teeth and gums for a period of 10 – 15 minutes.

It creates a clean environment in your mouth which prevents any sulfur-containing bacteria and toxins from forming around your tonsil stones, which in turn takes care of your bad breath.

This will also remove any other debris found in between your teeth as well as help cure tooth decay, bleeding gums and will brighten your teeth. So it’s also something you could do to improve your general oral health.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind:

  • Make sure you don’t swallow the oil, you’ve just gathered up loads of bad bacteria, toxins, mucus and who knows what else so please make sure you spit it out afterwards.
  • Do this for 10-15 minutes everyday for 2 weeks and then twice a week.
  • Be gentle with your swirling, you’re doing this for a long time and if you do it too vigorously then your jaw muscles will get tired out.
  • Swirl clean water around your mouth afterwards and brush your teeth.

#2 Salt Water Gargle

The salt water gargle has many benefits in relation to dealing with tonsil stones and is mostly used to get rid of them.

Thanks to its ability to detoxify the mouth and get rid of any of debris found in-between your teeth, one of these many benefits is getting rid of bad breath.

What to do:

  1. Mix 8 ounces of warm water with 1-2 teaspoons of sea salt
  2. Tilt your head back so it can reach your tonsils and swirl the mixture vigorously around your mouth for 15 seconds
  3. Repeat this process until the mixture is done
  4. Make sure you don’t drink any of the water, otherwise you could be sick
  5. Wash your mouth out with clean water afterwards

This exercise is also great for general oral health so I would wash the salt water around your mouth after every meal. This makes sure there isn’t any debris left in your mouth.

You can also brush your teeth after as well, you just need to be careful not to overdo it and wear away your enamel.

#3 Mouthwash

Mouthwash

You may have heard that gargling mouthwash is a great way to remove tonsil stones. This isn’t necessarily true (it is more likely the act gargling is what shakes the stones out of place) but it will help with halitosis.

This probably doesn’t surprise you as it cleans out your teeth and gums. However you can’t use any old mouthwash for it to work. You need a certain one.

The tonsil stones give off sulphur compounds which are the culprits behind your bad breath. And to fight these off you need to use a mouthwash that contains Chlorine Dioxide and Zinc Compounds.

Anything else won’t work as well.

Now the relief will not last all day (probably a few hours) so you may need to gargle it a couple of times a day but this could make all the difference. Especially if you’ve been a long time sufferer.

Just make sure you tilt your head back when using it. You need it to reach your tonsils for it to be effective.

#4 Use Some Honey

Honey

This is probably one of the more unknown methods in this list but it’s very effective. They kill the bad bacteria around your tonsils which cause the formation of the stones in the first place.

You’re really just preventing the growth of the stones by doing this but as a knock-on effect you’ll get better breath.

Place some honey in a bowl and gradually cover your tonsils with it using your finger. Do this until they are completely covered and keep the honey on as long as possible, without consuming it.

After a couple of minutes, or until it all slips off, rinse your mouth with water.

#5 Oral Probiotic

Oral Prebiotics

You will need to make sure you use a probiotic with S. Salivarius K12 as others aren’t as effective at fighting off any bad bacteria around your mouth.

Like the salt water gargle, this particular oral probiotic has many benefits to your dental and tonsil health with one of them being getting rid of bad breath.

Its ability to replace good bacteria with the bad bacteria in your mouth is why it’s so effective at fighting halitosis.

Without the bad bacteria, the tonsil stones can’t be formed and therefore, neither can the smell.

Conclusion

Now even though these methods provide immediate relief, they aren’t going to stop your bad breath forever.

You probably noticed that there was a current theme though each of these methods – they work to remove or prevent tonsil stones forming in the first place.

This is the underlying problem that you should be focusing on instead of this minor aftereffect. In doing so you’ll be treating your halitosis as well as any other problem that comes with tonsil stones.

The main cure for tonsil stones in maintaining good oral hygiene but there also other things you can do to get rid of your tonsil stones and prevent them from appearing again.
