What Should You Gargle to Get Rid of Tonsil Stones?

Many of you probably know that gargling mouthwash is a very effective way to remove your tonsil stones. Thanks to their detoxifying abilities they’re very good at killing the bad bacteria in your mouth and breaking down the tonsil stones themselves (even if only slightly – every little helps!).

This bacteria is what is (mainly) responsible for your tonsil stones so you need to clear your mouth out of them as best you can. Once you start doing this regularly, you will see results.

However, you do need to get the correct kind of mouthwash beforehand. You shouldn’t just use any old one as it could actually make things worse.

There are a variety for you to choose from, all with different properties and purposes, but I’m going to show you what to gargle for tonsil stones.

what to gargle for tonsil stonesSalt Water Gargle

Thanks to its detoxifying effects, salt water gargle is a great, cheap home remedy for clearing your mouth out of harmful organisms.

What you do is:

  1. Fill a glass with 1-2 tablespoons salt and 8 ounces of clean water
  2. Take a sip, tilt your head back and begin gargling so the water reaches your tonsils
  3. Spit it out after 15 seconds and repeat until all the water is gone
  4. Brush your teeth afterwards

This act of gargling with not only kill some bad bacteria which builds the tonsil stones but can also help remove the stones. As well as other benefits:

  • relieving pain from a sore throat
  • reducing any swelling caused by the stones
  • breaks up the mucus which cause the stones in the first place
  • helps get rid of the odor caused by the stones
  • helping balance the pH level of the bacteria in your mouth

As you can see, it can help with some of the symptoms caused by tonsil stones. So if you’re a regular sufferer then this is a good thing to do often. Even daily if you want.

Apple Cider Vinegarwhat to gargle for tonsil stones

This is another option you can make at home and a pretty powerful one at that.

Apple cider vinegar actually has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties which help fight off the bad bacteria in your mouth.

You would use it similarly to salt water:

  1. Add one tablespoon of ACV to 8 ounces of water
  2. Take a sip, tilt your head back so the mixture reaches your tonsils and begin gargling
  3. Spit this out after 15 seconds and repeat this until all the mixture is gone
  4. Rinse you mouth with water and brush your teeth afterwards

It also has an added benefit of reducing any swelling around your tonsils thanks to its anti-inflammatory effects. So if you’re struggling to swallow or have trouble eating, then I would try it out.

Hydrogen Peroxidegargle tonsil stones

This one might sound a little strange if you’re seeing this for the first time but gargling hydrogen peroxide is very good for treating tonsil stones and purifying the mouth.

Its antibacterial properties help reduce the bad bacteria and mucus content in your mouth making it less likely for the stones to grow. And thanks to its bubbling/foaming effect it can loosen and dissolve the tonsil stones when you gargle it.

Not only that but it’s great for promoting better overall oral health so you could see yourself getting whiter teeth and better breath after using it.

You’re best rinsing with this once or twice a day if you suffer from tonsil stones. Try and get 3% hydrogen peroxide solution if you can and mix this with equal parts clean water – I would use 4 ounces of each.

Like above, tilt your head back so the mixture reaches your tonsils and gargle for 15 seconds. Repeat the process until all the mixture is finished.

Be careful when doing however. You don’t want to consume any of the hydrogen peroxide.

For full effect, you should do this after you brush your teeth. Either at night or in the morning (probably best to do in the morning when your breath is at its worst).

Chlorine Dioxide Mouthwashmouthwash to get rid of tonsil stones

In order to get the best results (or any results) you can’t use any old mouthwash. You need to use one that contains Chlorine Dioxide and zinc compounds.

They help fight against and neutralize Volatile Sulfur compounds, which the biggest culprits to your bad breath.

This mouthwash won’t exactly cure your tonsil stones but it’ll help a lot with one of its most annoying side effects. You may only get relief for a few hours but this can be a pretty big deal for those suffering.

You also want to make sure your mouthwash doesn’t contain any alcohol. This will dry up your mouth and promote the growth of bacteria, leading to more bad breath and possibly more tonsil stone growth.

Of course rinsing with mouthwash daily can help improve your oral hygiene so I guess, in a sense, it can help treat tonsil stone growth.

Again when gargling, tilt your head back so the liquid reaches your tonsils.

Therabreath Mouthwashmouthwash to get rid of tonsil stones

This is one brand of mouthwash that has been none to effectively treat the prevention of tonsil stones and the bad breath that they cause. So I definitely recommend you check them out.

They’re an oxygenating mouthwash which means when you gargle it, it releases oxygen. This release of oxygen helps fight against the bacteria which causes bad breath, making it very effective.

They’re also made up of natural ingredients and contain nothing which make your problem worse.

If you want to learn more about Therabreath, then check out them out here.

Conclusion

Even though I’ve made some very useful suggestions, they won’t solve your underlying problem. They’ll only help mitigate it.

What you should be focusing on is how to get rid of and prevent your tonsil stones. If you don’t your problems will just keep coming back.

However, if you’ve been supplementing your oral hygiene routine with one of the mouthwashes above for a while and have yet to see results, then you may need to try something else. Check this out…
